An upcoming Special Issue of the Bioengineering Journal focusing on “Advancing Spinal Instability Diagnosis with Artificial Intelligence” is currently accepting manuscript submissions until November 30, 2025!
A snippet of Dr. John Hipp’s foreword:
“Spinal instability is a widely cited yet poorly defined diagnosis in both research and clinical practice, often guiding treatment decisions despite the absence of well-validated diagnostic tests. Challenges in routinely obtaining high-quality imaging, accurately assessing intervertebral motion and soft tissue abnormalities, and understanding how different forms of instability affect patients have hindered progress. Artificial intelligence may offer transformative solutions to these challenges. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge AI-driven approaches for diagnosing spinal instability, understanding its underlying causes, and monitoring its progression or response to treatment, paving the way for more precise and effective clinical management strategies.”
A recent recipient of the Henry Farfan Award in 2022 for recognition of his luminary contributions in spine research, Dr. Hipp has spent over three decades in the orthopedic biomechanics field (particularly the spine), and he also was co-founder of MMI in 2000. One of Dr. Hipp’s greatest achievements has been the development of technology to evaluate spinal motion and stability utilizing artificial intelligence – to evolve what was once a manual, arduous process to a simpler, faster, and yet more accurate measurements of intervertebral motion and spinal stability.
To this day, this technology, Quantitative Motion Analysis, or QMA®, has spotlighted MMI as a leader in the spine clinical trial space as well as other orthopedic applications, providing data for hundreds of clinical studies, resulting in over 150 peer review publications. Dr. Hipp himself has authored well over 100.
